Teaching and research collided in spectacular fashion Wednesday evening at the Entertainment Engineering Open Day session at the University of Derby.

Staff and current BSc (Hons) Sound, Light and Live Event Technology and BSc (Hons) Broadcast Engineering and Live Event Technology students worked together to use YouTube’s new feature allowing live streaming of 360 degree video and audio. Dr Bruce Wiggins headed up the configuration of the system, which is closely tied to his ongoing research projects into immersive audio.

This is also a good example of the types of internal ‘real-world learning’ we get our students to work on (progressing onto full, external, live events for real clients).

We believe that this is the first live University Open Day 360 degree audio/video broadcast carried out on YouTube.  While the resolution leaves much to be desired, it’s a huge step towards what should turn out to be an extremely valuable tool.

At the same time as the YouTube 360 degree broadcast, we also streamed in a more conventional format (with much higher resolution) via Facebook live, again, all setup, run and managed by our undergraduate students – with a debrief of what worked and what didn’t(!) in a debrief session during taught classes afterwards.  All valuable learning experience!
